November 06, 2021-March 13, 2022
The Zimmerli Art Museum at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, NJ, opened the exhibition Painting in Excess: Kyiv’s Art Revival, 1985–1993 on November 6. Admission to the Zimmerli is always free, with no tickets required.
Organized with the support of the Tymofieiev Foundation and the Igor Abramovych Foundation, curator Olena Martynyk realized a unique conceptual project that had been years in development. The exhibition focuses on a pivotal period of transformation and experimentation in Ukraine. The artists of this generation shaped the language of contemporary Ukrainian art in the 1990s and 2000s, elevating it to international recognition.
Many works from this era now belong to collections far beyond Ukraine, but a number of these defining pieces are gathered here at the Zimmerli. The exhibition remains on view until March 13 — a rare opportunity to experience firsthand the creative energy of a groundbreaking movement.
